Building the Ultimate Directory
Putting New York City’s new epicentre of tech on the map
As you walk out of Manhattan, you’ll see it across the water stretching from the beautiful parks on the right to the imposing Brooklyn Navy Yard on the left. Take the first exit off of the Brooklyn Bridge Pedestrian Path and head down the stairs. You’ll see a map to your left. Cross Prospect Street and continue your walk down Washington Street. Welcome to DUMBO. Short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, this neighborhood started as an industrial area and hotbed for creative movers and shakers. Today, DUMBO is a bustling mix of converted lofts, high-rise developments, beautiful waterfront parks and premier boutique shopping with the same artistic soul that sparked everything the neighborhood has become over the last decade. And while those in the heart of it could feel the energy around them, discovering thousands of new places relied on an equally innovative digital solution.
DUMBO is leading the pack with programming, typically hosting 4-5 events each week. To aggregate all this business and event information, the Lat Long team built an approachable directory system that allowed technical novices to write content, post events and maintain an accurate database of hundreds of businesses and locations around the neighborhood. We took inspiration from the existing aesthetic, creating a standout visual design in WordPress with custom post types and taxonomies. This flexible database and content manager allowed us to give visitors a comprehensive view of what’s happening when, where to find it and who’s involved.
